Album of the Year, 2001
Winner: Steely Dan - Two Against Nature
The 2001 Album of the Year category had a strong field to pick from. Radiohead looked set to be honoured for the ground-breaking Kid A, undoubtedly one of the most forward-thinking records to be released by a major band in recent years, Eminem was nominated for The Marshall Mathers LP - a landmark album in rap history - and genre-hopping musical chameleon Beck received a deserved nod for his release Midnite Vultures.
The winner, however, was Two Against Nature - the unremarkable comeback album by forgotten soft rock granddads Steely Dan, a record which had seemingly slipped under the radar of everyone except the Academy and helped render the awards a laughing stock.
