Then aged just 21, deaf actress Matlin remains the youngest person ever to win the Best Leading Actress Academy Award for her role as a woman who falls in love with a teacher at a school for the deaf in Children of A Lesser God. Since her debut Oscar triumph, she has made a number of appearances on TV shows, notably The West Wing and The L Word.
