Best Supporting Actress (1936) for Anthony Adverse
Sondergaard won an Oscar for her film debut in Anthony Adverse, and went on to appear in the original Mark of Zorro and Anna and the King of Siam. She was also originally cast as the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz, and went as far as having two test shots produced - one as a glamourous, slinky supervillain and one as a conventionally ugly, cackling witch. The studio decided to go for the ugly option and, worried wearing such disfiguring make-up would damage her career, Sondegaard pulled out of the project to be replaced by veteran actress Margaret Hamilton.
