Hosted: 2010
On the surface, it seemed as if James Franco and Anne Hathaway had it all: beauty, brains, talent... but sadly not the ability to compere a major awards ceremony. The Academy thrust the pair together and wheeled them out for hosting duties at the 2010 Oscars in an apparent bid to freshen up their ageing roster of MCs, but the experiment did not go well. The media universally slated their performance, with Franco coming in for the most criticism. The 127 Hours star was described as being aloof and uninterested, with some even claiming he seemed high. Hathaway, to her credit, was given praise for working her butt off to save their performance, but despite her best efforts, nothing could prevent the gruesome twosome from one of the hardest bombs in Oscar history. The Hollywood Reporter were particularly scathing: "Franco seemed distant, uninterested and content to keep his Cheshire-cat-meets-smug smile on display throughout... This year, the Oscars hit a new low. Like it fell into a hole.” It's unlikely the pair will be invited back any time soon.

Overall impression: One time was too many.
