An award show wouldn't be an award show without dull, inarticulate speeches, bad jokes, worse fashions and snarky fashion commentary, but in 2012 a gloomy cloud settled over the 54th annual Grammy Awards, which took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles: the untimely death of pop singer Whitney Houston, who was found dead in a hotel room on the afternoon of Saturday, February 11, at the age of 48.

In addition to performances by Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Coldplay, Chris Brown, Deadmau5, the Beach Boys and Adele (the evening's big winner, taking home six awards), singer Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to the late diva.
