The rivalry between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis is the stuff of legend. In 1963, Davis was nominated for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, but Crawford was not. Incensed, Crawford offered to collect the Oscar for any of Davis's rivals, should they scoop the prize but not be able to make the ceremony. And so it was that Crawford took to the stage to pick up the Oscar on behalf of Anne Bancroft, who won for her performance in The Miracle Worker.
