Gwyneth Paltrow is a great movie star, granted - but the fact that the Academy rewarded her for her role in the soppy romantic comedy "Shakespeare in Love" over Cate Blanchett's coolly intelligent monarch in 1998's "Elizabeth" was another odd victory for the period rom-com. Blanchett was finally rewarded with a Best Supporting Actress statuette for playing Katharine Hepburn in "The Aviator" (2004).
