Raging Bull loses to Ordinary People
Can you believe that Martin Scorsese did not win a Best Director Oscar until 2007? The New York-bred filmmaker has crafted some of the finest films of the last five decades, among them 1980's "Raging Bull". Having lost out to a boxing movie previously in the form of "Rocky", Scorsese's own boxing picture was nominated for eight Oscars, but only won two - for Best Actor (Robert De Niro) and Best Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker). Scorsese, paranoid after the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan the day before, was escorted out of the ceremonies by FBI agents he had hired to protect him prior to the announcement of "Ordinary People" as the Best Picture winner. We hold nothing against Robert Redford's directorial debut, but it lacks the, um, punch of Scorsese's flick.
