The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King took the Critics' Choice Best Picture prize in 2004, with Sean Penn taking the Best Actor prize for Mystic River and Charlize Theron winning actress for her stunning performance in serial killer drama Monster, with the same three also taking Oscars in those categories.

The People's Choice Awards voters began their love affair with Pirates of the Caribbean that year, with The Curse of the Black Pearl winning Favourite Motion Picture. Johnny Depp, surprisingly, didn't win the Favourite Motion Picture Actor prize, despite his debut performance as Captain Jack Sparrow gaining a huge amount of love, as well as a Best Actor Academy Award nomination. The prize instead went to a pre-meltdown Mel Gibson, with the Favourite Actress prize going to another Peoples' Choice favourite, Julia Roberts.
