Based on personal experience, Zach Braff's film followed a 26-year-old man returning home to New Jersey following the death of his mother. After seeing Garden State for the first time at Sundance, both Miramax and Fox Searchlight picked up the film and continued to screen it at festivals before its cinema release. The film attracted a large cult following and was praised for its soundtrack (leading Braff to pick up a Grammy for music selection).
