Huzzah for the 70th milestone! It feels as if the Golden Globes are a natural part of life but the awards date back to 1943 when journalists decided they would like to give out awards to honour the best in film and television. This changed in 1958 when it became fashionable for famous people to hand out the awards (all because ‘Ratpack’ trio Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior stormed the stage!).

Also, between 1958 and 1963, you could only view the ceremony if you happened to be in Los Angeles.
