WINNER: Colin Firth

WON FOR: 'The King's Speech'

SHOULD HAVE WON FOR: 'A Single Man,' in which Firth gave a performance of such power and gravity that he was marked as the Best Actor favourite for the bulk of 2009 ... until people started getting wind of Jeff Bridges in 'Crazy Heart' late in the year. By the time the Oscars rolled around, Bridges was unstoppable - and Firth saw his chances dwindling by the day. Fortunately, his subsequent performance in 'The King's Speech' all but guaranteed him a win in 2010, in one of the quickest self-corrections in Academy history.
