WON FOR: "The Color of Money"

SHOULD HAVE WON FOR: A bunch of other movies, but most of all "The Verdict," for which Newman scored his most recent Best Actor nomination in 1983, losing to Ben Kingsley and the "Gandhi" juggernaut. Newman is a pleasure to watch in "The Color of Money" as aging pool shark Fast Eddie Felson - a role he originated 25 years earlier in "The Hustler," landing the second Oscar nomination of his career - but it's not exactly his most difficult performance. The downside to his win? James Woods, who was up for his blazing turn in Oliver Stone's "Salvador," had to lose, and Oscar's still looking for a way to make it up to him.
