\WINNER: Jeremy Irons

WON FOR: 'Reversal of Fortune'

SHOULD HAVE WON FOR: 'Dead Ringers,' a searing dual performance that wasn't even nominated two years earlier - though every Oscar watcher agrees that it should have been. And Irons acknowledged as much when he made a point of thanking 'Ringers' director David Cronenberg in his 'Reversal' acceptance speech, making the argument that he wouldn't have landed the showier role of Claus von Bulow had he not dazzled the moviemaking world with his tragic turn as doomed twin gynecologists in 'Ringers' ... and implying that he wouldn't have appeared on Oscar's radar without that film, either. He was probably right.
