WINNER: Martin Landau
WON FOR: 'Ed Wood'
SHOULD HAVE WON FOR: 'Tucker: The Man and His Dream,' where he deftly stole the movie out from Jeff Bridges as Preston Tucker's true-believing business partner. But that was Kevin Kline's year, so Landau had to settle for the work that 'Tucker' generated - including a powerhouse turn in Woody Allen's 'Crimes and Misdemeanors,' which led to his second Oscar nomination. Eventually, Tim Burton cast him as the resentful, morphine-addled Bela Lugosi, pulled out of has-been obscurity by Johnny Depp's wide-eyed dreamer for one last pitiful turn before the cameras - a role Landau seizes like he's ripping into a juicy steak.
