On to the first award of the night, that for best supporting actress in a motion picture. Newcomer Lupita Nyong'o seemed a lock in this category for her heart-breaking turn as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, but few can compete with the critics’ darling, Jennifer Lawrence, tonight dressed like a coffee filter as she scooped up the award for her quirky turn in American Hustle. It must have been her improv karaoke to “Live and Let Die” that did it.
