There is no denying the populist appeal of the Robert Zemeckis-directed Forrest Gump. The Tom Hanks juggernaut swept the 67th Academy Awards, winning in the Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay categories, among several others. Those wins prevented The Shawshank Redemption from attaining a place in Oscar history.
