Best Actor and Best Foreign-Language Film: Life Is Beautiful (1997)

Italian funnyman, actor, writer, director Roberto Benigni's hyperactive excitement when he took home two Oscars for Life Is Beautiful was extraordinary to watch. But his career since then has been less exciting, his movie Pinocchio (one of the most expensive films made in Italy) was universally panned, as was his most recent -- the Iraq-war romantic picture The Tiger and the Snow which The New York Times claimed was, "A scorching affront to Italians, Iraqis and the intelligence of movie audiences everywhere."
