Akshay Kumar, rose from nothing (he was then known as Rajiv Bhatia) and through sheer hard work and steely determination has become one of the most popular stars of today.
Born in Amritsar and raised in New Delhi, Akshay moved to Bangkok to study martial arts. To make ends meet, he worked there as a chef before coming back to India to Mumbai to become a martial arts instructor.
Akshay made his debut in 1991's 'Saugandh', which didn't make much of a splash. Recognition came to him in the form of the 1992 thriller, 'Khiladi', directed by Abbas-Mustan. The 'Khiladi' word would go on to be associated with Akshay for ever more, for more reasons than one.
In the 90s, Akshay developed a reputation as a ladies' man. His list of attachments included co-stars Raveena Tandon, Shilpa Shetty and Pooja Batra. It was in 2001 that Twinkle Khanna decided to make an honest man out of him and the couple got married.
From being an action and dancing star, Akshay has also moved on to making people laugh with his histrionics in 'Hera Pheri', 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' and 'Welcome'.
One of the busiest actors in Bollywood, Akshay and his wife were recently involved in a controversy where Twinkle unbuttoned his jeans during a ramp show at the Lakme Fashion Week, and invoked the wrath of India's Moral Police.
