In 1958, against the backdrop of ongoing political upheval - notably the conflict in the French colony in Algeria - the French government considered cancelling the festival altogether. In the end, the ferstival went ahead, but with many visitors leaving early, numbers of journalists not present, and with the closing gala called off.
