The Palme D'Or is one of the most prestigious prizes in the film world. Given each year to the most outstanding movie at Cannes, it has been awarded to productions by such luminaries as Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanksi, Francis Ford Coppola, Federico Fellini, David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino - to name but a few.

Despite the fact that for two long periods the award was known as the Grand Prix du Festival Internationaldu Film, the Palme d'Or is still recognised worldwide as a benchmark for cinematic excellence. Many past winners have gone on to achieve legendary status amongst movie fans, so MSN has decided to take a look at a small selection of the many fantastic films to have received this prize throughout Cannes' history.
