Caine’s transition from leading man to perennial supporting actor was maintained by his turn as Bruce Wayne’s trusted butler Albert Pennyworth - his most recently recognisable role - in the trio of Christopher Nolan-directed Batman films Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Perhaps testament to his convincing performances in this kind of role, Caine made similar father figure appearances in the likes of The Prestige (2006) and Inception (2012), collaborating with Nolan in both again, as well as 2006’s Children of Men, alongside Clive Owen.
