With his stock rising thanks to the success of Zulu, Caine cemented himself as one of the icons of swinging '60s cool with well-received performances as spy Harry Palmer in The Ipcress File (1965), as the eponymous lead in 1967's Alfie, and as Charlie Croker (pictured, centre) in cult crime caper The Italian Job (1969).
