A relatively lean period followed for Caine in the 1990’s, his most notable role coming as Scrooge in the Muppets re-telling of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol in 1992. He had returned to form by the end of the decade however, picking up a Golden Globe for his performance in British drama Little Voice (1998), before his turn as orphanage director Dr. Wilbur Larch in 1999’s The Cider House Rules earned him recognition from the Academy for a second time as an Actor in a Supporting Role.
