Lady Gaga caused a scene in Los Angeles as she stepped out with her ghoulish single artwork painted onto her face – well, she’s not one to shy away from the cameras!

The make-up was a replica of the artwork from her new single, Applause, which she released early after it was leaked onto the internet.

With a pale, whitened face Gaga flaunted tumbling dark hair and brightly coloured make-up to create her shocking new look.

But was the walking artwork shameless self-promotion for her new album ARTPOP or a serious makeover? Who knows, but one thing’s for sure – Lady Gaga’s comeback is officially in full swing.

The Just Dance singer was seen earlier in the day strolling up to the E! studios, without her devoted entourage, when she was besieged by a mob of elated fans. Gaga dutifully posed for photos and signed autographs for her loyal Little Monsters.

The singer was then spotted that evening, still in full make-up, watching a show in Hollywood.

Applause is Gaga’s first new material since 2011, so it’s no real surprise it was hotly anticipated by both fans and music critics.

But it seems the unconventional singer wasn’t too pleased that rough, uncut versions of the single were leaked. Applause was originally scheduled for release on 19 August.

The 27-year-old tweeted: “Lord in heaven, why? You just couldn't wait. This is too much for one Saturday.”

She then tweeted “a pop music emergency is underway” as the single was distributed to iTunes and Vevo a week before its official release date.

A day later the single has had over one million views on Vevo and critics are raving about it.

The singer took a break from her flourishing career to have an operation on her hip in January, meaning she had to cancel the remaining dates on her Born This Way Ball concert tour, as well as put the album on hold. Since then the star’s been keeping a low profile to recuperate, only being spotted occasionally in a designer, 24k gold wheelchair.

Gaga, real name Stefani, is set to give the first performance of her new single at the MTV Awards on 25 August – it remains to be seen how the singer will be dressed, but we’re sure the performance will be unforgettable.
