And in a new interview she admits, “Am I bossy? Absolutely. I don't like to lose.”
Naomi Campbell has made a triumphant return to the catwalk at New York Fashion Week, but she’s also had time to give a new interview defending her reputation as a diva and troublemaker.
The supermodel had the honour of closing Diane Von Furstenberg’s spring/summer 2014 show. Naomi’s catwalk appearances are few and far between these days, her last being Versace’s show at Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. That’s Naomi’s choice, of course – she’s still very much in demand.
The British star was discovered as a teenager while shopping in London and went on to become one of the original supermodels, along with the likes of Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista.
Nearly 30 years after her first magazine cover, Naomi’s longevity is unrivalled, but negative reports continue to follow her around. After several run-ins with maids and personal assistants, Naomi pleaded guilty in 2007 to assaulting her former housekeeper (she threw a jewel-encrusted BlackBerry at her) and was sentenced to five days of community service.
A year later she was charged with assaulting two police officers at Heathrow Airport after an argument over lost luggage and was banned from flying British Airways - it’s not surprising that public opinion is that she is bad-tempered and out of control.
But Naomi downplays that perception in a new interview with The Guardian. “Well, everyone has a temper,” she reasons. “A temper is an emotion. But do I care what they say? Is that what you're asking? Everyone is entitled to their opinion.”
A few years on from her convictions, the 43-year-old insists she has mellowed. "I'm a work in progress. But yes, I'm happy with the way I am now.
“In life, you have to have the vulnerability to accept when you are to blame. And I do have that and I am open enough to say it. I've made mistakes… But I don't regret anything. I don't live in regret."
But there’s no doubt Naomi’s formidable character traits are still evident. "Am I bossy? Absolutely. I don't like to lose, and if I'm told no then I find another way to get my yes. But I'm a loyal person. And I'm generous and I don't bull****,” she says.
