Miley Cyrus' Bangerz, reviewed by MSN Music
Bangerz (which comes with four different covers) was always going to be a talking point, but we can’t help but wonder if Miley’s crazy antics of late have completely overshadowed her talent. Let’s not forget, Miley is a girl who rose to fame as one of Disney’s princesses – Hannah Montana – and there’s no denying she has a great voice and a natural knack for entertaining people.
However, if you look behind all the Miley mania (and my goodness, she has tried HARD to get your attention), you’re actually left with a satisfying album and one that cements her as a bona fide artist and one to reckon with. Miley worked with producer Mike Will Made It to establish her new sound, and they collaborated with a series of hip-hop artists including Pharrell Williams and will.i.am to really get the job done.
A mix of lovey-dovey ballads about ex-fiancé Liam Hemsworth ('My Darlin’ with its 'Stand By Me' sample is our favourite) and those ‘bangers’ the title promises (beat-heavy 'FU' and '#GETITRIGHT' are well made and easy to enjoy), the record is actually rather decent and, we’d say, a solid 7.5 out of 10.
It has its flaws – '4x4' featuring Nelly is a song that could have been left off the album (Miley claims ‘I’m a female rebel’ as if we weren’t already aware of this), and the fact that the controversial star has included weed-shaped stickers with the CD issue is probably a mistake. Especially considering the average age of her fan base is probably around 10.
Overall: It’s certainly not everybody’s cup of tea, but it’s the perfect example of a mainstream album for 2013. It’s a mix of hits (with just one or two fillers) and yes, it’s slightly over-produced, but that IS what the kids enjoy these days after all. 'FU' is a great song and we think it should be a single.
