Young farm girl Buttercup (Robin Wright) reluctantly agrees to marry Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) five years after the love of her life, dashing farm hand Westley (Cary Elwes), mysteriously disappears. But Buttercup is kidnapped before the wedding and then rescued by the Dread Pirate Roberts who turns out to be the returned Westley. But Humperdinck is not about to let his betrothed off the hook that easily, especially as she is the key to his diabolical plan to start a war. Westley himself requires rescuing at one point (after being revived from being “mostly dead”) but eventually comes to Buttercup’s aid.
