Not quite ready to plant her roots in rom-com, Bullock turned her attention to the John Grisham based thriller, A Time to Kill, starring an all-star cast of big ‘90s names. Here she plays Ellen Roark, a law student who helps out on the defense team for Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson), after he murders his daughter’s rapists. Given the sensitive topics of rape, racism and prejudice in the justice system, this was one of Bullock’s most trying roles as she sought to avoid the pitfalls of typecasting and stand out against an impressive roster of contemporaries.
