A section of Tamil cinema industry joined the continuing state-wide protests, largely by students, over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

Tamil Nadu Film Directors' Association members led by M Ameer staged a day-long hunger strike in which Shankar, A R Murugadoss, Mani Ratnam, Sarathkumar, Ilaiyaraaja, Gautham Menon, V I S Jayabalan, K V Anand, Jayam Ravi, Bala, Prasanna, Suhasini, Ravi K. Chandran, among others participated.

Their demands included implementing a Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution seeking economic sanctions against Colombo till Tamils are ensured status on par with majority Sinhalese and conducting a referendum among the Sri Lankan Tamils for a separate Tamil Ealam (homeland).
