Several west coast clubs cancelled scheduled shows by indie folk singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked after she allegedly went on an anti-gay tirade during a show in San Francisco. Shocked, who rose to fame in the late ‘80s and early ’90s as an anti-establishment singer and later became a born-again Christian, reportedly spoke out in support of California’s Proposition 8 law banning gay marriage. This did not go down well with her gay fanbase, some of whom were in the audience that night and walked out.

“When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization and Jesus will come back,” the 51-year-old told the stunned crowd. “You are going to leave here and tell people ‘Michelle Shocked said God hates f*****s.” Shocked later said that her comments were misinterpreted and staged a solitary sit-in outside a Santa Cruz venue that cancelled one of her shows.
