It wasn't a great artistic moment, but Britney Spears' decision back in February 2007 to shave her head in a Californian tattoo parlour can be read in many ways. Cracks in the public facade of the pop star had been showing for months, increasingly so after her separation from husband Kevin Federline the previous November. But Spears' fall from grace after years of carefully managed stardom was crystallized by that one act of defiance, and can certainly be read as a metaphor for her desire to divest herself of the pressures on her to always be smiling and always be beautiful.
