Nominees: Carly Rae Jepsen, Conor Maynard, Foster the People, Fun., Gotye, Lana Del Rey, Mac Miller, Michael Kiwanuka, Of Monsters and Men, Rebecca Ferguson, Rita Ora

This award for the most attention-grabbing breakthrough could be a hotly contended one, with plenty of deserving names on the list of nominees. Lana Del Rey, for example, was able to enchant the indie blogosphere in a way that very few have done before her prior to achieving mainstream success, while Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' is as infectious a breakthrough single as there has ever been. Our money's on Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter Gotye though, who deservedly gained a huge amount of attention by proving that the pop video can still be an art form through his brilliant promo clip for 'Somebody That I Used To Know'. The song itself isn't bad either.

Our prediction: Gotye
