So convincing in the role of a mentally challenged teen was Leo in Lasse Hallström’s quirky, character drama What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, that many of those new to the young star were convinced his condition was genuine.

Describing the part as “the most fun I’ve ever had,” Leo’s work earned him his first Oscar nod, a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor nomination for an Academy Award that ultimately went to The Fugitive’s Tommy Lee Jones.
