Released the same year as Leo’s first Scorsese collaboration, Gangs of New York, Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can was less of an ensemble effort, thereby giving the young actor greater scope to shine.

The tale of gifted con artist Frank Abagnale, who wrote $4 million worth of forged cheques, assumed eight different identities and twice escaped police custody, all before he was 21 years old, the movie was a perfect fit for DiCaprio’s many talents.

Happiest of all with the star’s performance was the real Abagnale, whose initial doubts that Leonardo wasn’t “suave” enough to play him, were quickly assuaged once he saw the actor’s work.
