From Glory director Ed Zwick came Blood Diamond, a poignant, powerful thriller set against the chaotic backdrop of civil war-torn Sierra Leone.

As a former Zimbabwean mercenary currently trading in conflict diamonds, although DiCaprio’s character is initially portrayed as a cold-hearted tyrant, his slow transformation into a halfway decent human being is what makes this film so compelling.

It came as no surprise when the Academy honoured DiCaprio with his third Oscar nomination, though ultimately The Last King of Scotland’s Forest Whitaker won the prize.
