15. Rowling changed her name to avoid warding off male readers

It is quite well known that the first Harry Potter manuscript was rejected by several publishers until Bloomsbury finally accepted it in 1996. The book publishers suggested that she used initials instead of her full name - Joanne Rowling -so as not to put off male readers. What became of this move created the most recognizable initials in the business: J. K. Rowling borrowed the 'K' from her grandmother's name, Kathleen.
