In early 2000, Perry headed to Nashville and signed to the Christian music label Red Hill, with whom she recorded a self-titled gospel rock album (under the name Kate Hudson) at the age of 15. But after failing to make an impact in the Music City, she changed her last name from Hudson to Perry (her mother's maiden name), and moved back to California. For the next seven years, she would grind it out in Los Angeles, bouncing between labels and one-off gigs, before finally teaming up with superstar writer-producer Dr. Luke and producing the track 'I Kissed A Girl.'
