At the end of 'The Dark Knight', Harvey Dent is upheld as a hero and the saviour of Gotham. The public never know that he became the unstable villain Two-Face. Batman decides to take the blame for his wrongdoing and takes the blame for killing the 'hero' Harvey Dent. Commissioner Gordon sums it up as Batman disappears into the shadows.

'He's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not the hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A Dark Knight.'
