Winehouse's battles with drugs attracted much media attention over her years of fame. Winehouse cancelled numerous shows in the UK and Europe, citing exhaustion. During this period, the singer was hospitalized for a reported overdose of heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and alcohol. Winehouse told a magazine 'I really thought that it was over for me then.'

Despite a stint in rehab in January 2008, by April her erratic behaviour caused more concerns of a relapse. Her father Mitch and her management sought assistance to have her involuntarily committed. Winehouse moved to Saint Lucia to work on new music and continue to fight her drug addictions. Her physician commented that Winehouse was clean of drugs at this point but still battled alcohol addictions.
