In 2011, Marvel introduced a new Spider-Man to their Ultimate Marvel continuity. Inspired partly by Barack Obama's election to the White House, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli created the character of Miles Morales - an African American teen who gains powers similar to those of Peter Parker. Some dismissed the creation of Morales as a politically correct publicity stunt, but the comics have gained generally positive reviews.
