Animal Rights, Human Wrongs (2004)

In 2001, Toronto art student Jesse Power and two of his friends videotaped themselves torturing a stray cat; three years later, documentarian Zev Asher dissected the event and its aftermath in Casuistry: The Art of Killing a Cat - which became just as controversial when animal-rights activists got word that it had been booked into TIFF's Real to Real series. A rumour spreads that footage of the cat's death is included in the film; it's not true, but programmer Sean Farnel received a death threat and the festival was pressured to pull the film. It screened as planned, but Power showed up at the first public screening at the Cumberland Cinemas and was arrested outside the venue for breach of peace after a confrontation with protesters.
