Peter Jackson took us back to Middle Earth in an eye-popping 3D adventure that made up for what it lacked in forward momentum with dazzling spectacle and iconic characters we greeted like old pals. The result was tonally different from the Lord of the Rings films yet still instilled with their grandeur and majesty.
