While Madonna’s mix of Catholic iconography and sexual liberation politics are old hat in North America, the 54-year-old pop star’s social views remain taboo by Russian standards. When Madge’s global ‘MDNA’ rolled into Moscow and St. Petersburg, it left a pile of peeved politicians in its wake. First, Madonna rankled authorities in the Russian capital for expressing solidarity with jailed feminist punk band Pussy Riot and later angered social conservatives by giving an impassioned gay rights speech in St. Petersburg. The latter move prompted anti-gay activists to filed a $10 million lawsuit against the star that alleged she her speech was contravened a local ‘homosexual propaganda’ law but a judge later dismissed the case outright.
