Jack Nicholson shared the Critics' Choice Award for his performance in geriatric snoozefest About Schmidt with Daniel Day Lewis for his turn in Gangs of New York. Julianne Moore took the female equivalent for her performance in Far from Heaven, but none of that trio got lucky at the Oscars, with Adrien Brody (The Pianist) and Nicole Kidman (The Hours) bagging the lead acting Academy Awards that year. Chicago took Best Picture at both The Oscars and the Critics' Choice.

There was sharing to be found at the 2003 People's Choice Awards too, with the Favourite Motion Picture prize going to both Spider-Man and The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts took the film acting prizes, as they did in 2004.
