Silver Linings Playbook
Whatâs it about?
A manic depressive fresh out of the booby hatch whose attempts to stay on his meds and out of trouble are complicated by a pretty young widow who compels him to take part in a cheesy dancing contest.
Whyâs it nominated?
Because it is fun, light and humorous, qualities that are as thin on the ground this year as movies that donât last two-and-a-half hours. Director David O Russell has solid previous when it comes to dysfunctional family portraits, one of which â The Fighter â took home two acting gongs two years ago. That film had seven Oscar nominations; Playbook beats it with eight.
What are its chances?
Though SLP is shortlisted in all four acting categories, only best actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence looks a lock. Russell might land the best adapted screenplay prize, though, and could potentially scoop best director as well if the Academyâs voters decide to spread the wealth.
