Audiences around the world audibly gasped in 1980 when Darth dropped his paternal bombshell. It’s one of the most memorable moments in movie history and the start of a complex father son relationship that would eventually see the duo join forces to oust the evil Emperor. But put yourself for one moment in young Skywalker’s shoes. Exhausted after an epic light sabre duel that’s cost you a hand and almost your life, you find out your father isn’t dead but actually an evil Sith overlord with a respirator strapped for his chest and a habit for force choking underperforming admirals. It’s the type of thing you’d expect to find on a daytime chat show, if they had an intergalactic equivalent of Jerry Springer that is.
