The second film was In The Heat Of The Night, a mystery set in the deep south of the USA, in which Poitier's Virgil Tibbs - a police detective from the more racially mixed north of the country - is forced to work with Rod Steiger's racist police chief to solve a murder, while contending with the prejudice of the locals. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, and quickly became seen as a classic that accurately portrayed the tensions in Civil Rights-era America.
