During the mid-sixties, The Amazing Spider-Man became Marvel's top selling series and Spidey himself became a cultural phenomenon. An Esquire poll of students in 1965 put Spider-Man up alongside Che Guevara and Bob Dylan as their favourite revolutionary icon.
