Then: Takei played Hikaru Sulu, the Enterprise's helmsman, in the original series and subsequent films.

Where is he now? Takei has always been involved in issues outside of acting - from his work helping to set up the Los Angeles subway system in the 1970s, his discussion of the internment of Japanese Americans (including himself) during World War II, to his advocacy work for gay rights causes in the present day (Takei married his long-term partner Brad Altman in 2008). His other notable acting role came on the sci-fi show Heroes from 2007 to 2010.
